Questions
Dental Questions You Should Ask Your Dentist
Here are a few typical dental questions:
Dental Question: Is your dentist gentle and caring?
Your mouth is a tender and private place. You need to know that you and your family are being treated with all the gentleness and compassion you deserve.
Dental Question. Is your dentist concerned about your comfort?
Biological dentistry is practically pain free. But does your dentist offer you refreshments when you arrive? How about hot towels, a toothbrush and mouthwash so you can freshen up before your treatment? How about a warm blanket to keep you cozy? It’s all the little things your dentist does that show you how much he cares about your comfort.
Dental Question: Does your dentist take time to educate you about your dental health and involve you in your diagnosis and treatment?
In ancient times, the physician was a teacher first, a doctor second. Does your dentist and the dental staff go out of their way to educate you about how you can benefit from modern dentistry? Do they answer your questions and offer you written, video and audio materials to help your understanding?
Dental Question: Does your dentist focus on prevention over symptom treatment and place service above profit?
Emergency dentistry and restorative procedure are attempts to fix what is broken. The procedures are more costly to you and more profitable to the dentist. You want to find a dentist that is willing to help you fix what needs to be fixed, but whose real investment is helping you prevent future problems.
Dental Question: Is your dentist concerned about saving you money?
Does your dentist offer you optional treatments and explain the costs and benefits in order to help you make informed decisions? Does he offer reduced fees for cash payments? Does he explain to you that dental insurance coverage is only good for average care and that average care, over time, will likely cost you more in time, money and agony in the future?
Dental Question: Does your dentist use the best of leading-edge procedures and equipment?
Does your dentist use high-resolution cameras to guide you through the examination and treatment so you can see exactly what he is seeing? How about air-abrasion, the new drill free dentistry? Does he offer you the newest and the safest dental materials to help you avoid the possible dangers of mercury/silver fillings?
Dental Question: Does your dentist have a passion for good dentistry?
Does your dentist really love doing dentistry? When it comes to your teeth and your health is he a bit of a perfectionist? Is he obsessed with discovering and mastering the latest techniques, information and skills for superior dentistry?
Dental Question: Is your time important to the dentist?
Does your dentist cram too many appointments into short time slots? Is the waiting room always full? If patients are backed up due to an emergency, does he offer you a small token of apology, such as free movie rental vouchers?
Dental Question: Will your dentist treat your whole family?
Is the dental team as good with your kids and your spouse as they are with you? Will your dentist make room in the schedule for your whole family so you don’t have to make multiple appointments on different days?
Dental Question: Is the dental team warm and friendly and is the office full of laughter and smiles?
Do you feel welcome in the office or are you just another patient? Is the office a casual and comfortable place to be or does it feel stiff and unfriendly?

Why You Should Choose a Biological Dentist
| The number one concern of a biological dentist is the well being of each patient. A good biological dentist will see health as a state of vigor, of wholeness, not just the absence of illness.
Although a dentist can neither diagnose nor treat medical conditions, it is essential that you find a dentist who is aware of the relationship between dental health and your health in general and who can be an effective part of your team of health care providers. That’s why it is so important to seek out a competent biological dentist. Maximizing Oral Health and WellnessTo maximize oral health and overall health issues – such as nutritional support, detoxification, the structural alignment of the jaw and TMJ prevention – diet and lifestyle changes may be addressed. There is a heavy emphasis on educating patients about the best preventative care methods available. Biological dentists are also at the forefront of developing new equipment and techniques to improve patient comfort and safety during corrective and restorative treatments, including new bio-compatible and longer lasting dental materials. A Biological dentist will address long-term health issues by recommending the removal of toxic dental materials such as mercury amalgam fillings and by working to eliminate chronic infections in the mouth. These chronic infections can include cavitations in the jaw-bone and infections from prior root canal procedures. When dealing with any oral health need, a good biological dentist will choose the least invasive and most effective treatment available, working to avoid any unnecessary structural changes in the mouth that could cause future complications. |

Add Years to Your Life or Lose Them |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How would you like to add thirty healthy years to your life?
How about increasing your energy level and decreasing your stress or enhancing your pleasure? Research is showing us that these things are now possible by taking better care of your oral health. Unfortunately, research is also showing us that you may be risking your health and developing serious illnesses if you are not taking good care of your teeth and gums. Each year, the medical research community continues to collect evidence of the deadly effects of improper and incomplete care for your teeth and gums. In the field of biological dentistry, also called health-centered or holistic dentistry, there are thousands of reports, and solid research, of physical and emotional ailments being relieved through proper treatment. It may be surprising to discover how many ailments can be relieved, in whole or in part, through biological dentistry – and that these ailments seem totally unrelated to the mouth! |

Oral Health and Disease |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| After more than 40 years of research and observation, Dr. Reinhard (a well-known German physician) reported that almost 80% of all illness are related to problems in the mouth.
Other researchers have established conclusive links between poor oral health, toxic dental materialsand diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease and more. You see, the human body is a complex network of interrelated systems. Poor health in any one of these systems will be reflected throughout the whole network of systems. So, while it may not be literally true that illness in the mouth will always cause illness in other parts of the body, the mouth, gums and the teeth will contribute to and reflect the health of your entire body. |

Fluoridated Water Causes Brain Damage in Children
by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer
(Natural News) A new study pre-published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives confirms that fluoridated water causes brain damage in children. The most recent among 23 others pertaining to fluoride and lowered IQ levels, the new study so strongly proves that fluoride is a dangerous, brain-destroying toxin that experts say it could be the one that finally ends water fluoridation.
“This is the 24th study that has found this association,” explained Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network (FAN). “[B]ut this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children’s blood.”
For the study, researchers evaluated 512 children ages 8-13 in two Chinese villages, one village with higher than average fluoride levels. After accounting for external variables like lead exposure, iodine deficiency and other conditions that might affect brain health, the team still found that the number of higher intelligence children in the low fluoride community was 350 percent higher than the number in the high fluoride community.
“In this study we found a significant dose-response relation between fluoride level in serum and children’s IQ,” wrote the study authors.
Though there have been numerous studies over the years th[at] identify fluoride as a neurotoxin, most mainstream medical professionals in the U.S. have ignored them and continue to support water fluoridation. But the evidence continues to mount, and sooner or later the medical community will have to come to grips with the truth about fluoride.
“This should be the study that finally ends water fluoridation,” explained Tara BAnk, Ph.D., Science and Health Officer at FAN. “Millions of American children are being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin on a daily basis. Who in their right minds would risk lowering their child’s intelligence in order to reduce a small amount of tooth decay, for which the evidence is very weak.”

Should You Have Root Canals?
There are problems with root canal therapy you should know about.
Most of the information found here is based on George Meinig’s book Root Canal Cover-Up. Dr. George Meinig is an authority on root canals. He brings a most interesting perspective to the possible dangers of root canal therapy: 50 years ago Dr. Meinig was one of the founders of the American Association of Endodontists (root canal specialists). So he has filled his share of root canals.
When he wasn’t filling root canals himself, Dr. Meinig was teaching the technique to dentists across the United States at weekend clinics and seminars. A few years ago, after having recently retired, Dr. Meinig decided to read all 1100+ pages of the detailed research of Dr. Weston Price, (D.D.S.), a pioneer in the field of root canal therapy.
Dr. Weston Price’s careful, impeccable research took place over a 25 year period during the early 1900’s. Dr. Price published his work in 2 volumes in 1923. In 1915, the National Dental Association (which changed its name a few years later to “The American Dental Association”) was so impressed with Dr. Price’s work that they appointed him their first Research Director.
Dr. Meinig was shocked and startled by Dr. Price’s published research. In Dr. Weston Price’s research was valid documentation of systemic illnesses resulting from latent infections lingering in filled roots.
So exactly what is the problem with root canal therapy?
Dr. Meinig’s book, which is based on the 25 years of research done by Dr. Weston Price, discusses how root canals can cause BACTERIA to become entrenched inside the structure of teeth and end up causing the largest number of diseases ever traced to a single source.
According to Dr. Meinig, a high percentage of chronic degenerative diseases can originate from root canals. The most frequent were circulatory and heart diseases. The next most common diseases were those of the joins and arthritis.
Again according to Dr. Meinig, there was an unfortunate turn of events whereby very valuable information was buried and covered up some 70 years ago by a small group of autocratic doctors who just didn’t believe – or couldn’t grasp – the “focal infection theory”.
Root canals and the focal infection theory
What is the “focal infection” theory? The “focal infection” theory states that germs from a central focal infection – such as teeth roots, teeth, inflamed gum tissues or perhaps tonsils, metastasize to the heart, the eyes, the kidneys, lungs or other organs/tissues, establishing the same infection in new areas.
Revolutionary thinking in the early 1920’s, this theory has been demonstrated and proven many times over. However, today, both patients and doctors have been “brain washed” into believing that infections are less serious because we now have antibiotics. That is not the case. In the case of root-filled teeth, the no-longer-living tooth lacks a blood supply flowing to its interior. So circulating antibiotics can not impact the bacteria living there because they can not get at them.
In his research, Dr. Price did hundreds of experiments, which Dr. Meinig discusses in his book “Root Canal Cover-Up”. In one of those experiments, for example, Dr. Price removed an infected tooth from a woman who suffered from severe arthritis. As soon as he finished with the patient, he implanted the tooth beneath the skin of a healthy rabbit. Within 48 hours the rabbit was crippled with arthritis.
Dr. Meinig claims that all root-filled teeth harbor some bacteria and/or other infective agents. No matter what technique or material is used, the root-filling shrinks microscopically. Another point is key: the bulk of the solid-appearing teeth, called the “dentin”, is not solid and actually consists of miles of tiny “tubules”.
In a healthy tooth, those “tubules” transport a fluid which carries nourishment to the inside of the tooth. To give you an idea, it is said that if the tubules of a front tooth were stretched out, they would be 3 miles long… A root-filled tooth no longer has any fluid circulating through it, but the maze of tubules remains. The anaerobic bacteria that live there seem remarkably safe from antibiotics.
Microscopic organisms hiding in this maze of “tubules” simply migrate into the interior of the tooth and set up housekeeping. A filled root seems to be a favorite place to start a new colony.
Another thing we need to understand is that large, relatively harmless bacteria common in the mouth, change and adapt to the new conditions. They shrink in size to fit the cramped quarters and even learn how to survive on very little food.
Those organisms that need oxygen mutate and become able to survive without the presence of oxygen. Though this process of adaptation, these formerly friendly/normal organisms become pathogenic – capable of producing disease – and more virulent and they produce much more potent toxins.
Today’s bacteriologists are confirming the discoveries of Dr. Price’s team of bacteriologists. They isolated in root canals the same strains of “streptococcus”, “staphylococcus” and “spirochetes”.
Not everyone who has ever had a root canal filled is made sick by it. It is believe now that every root canal filling does leak and bacteria do invade its structure. However the variable factor is the vitality of the person’s immune system. Some people in good health are able to control the organisms which escape from their teeth into other areas of their body.
It is believed that this happens because their immune system’s white blood cells and other immune system fighters are not constantly compromised by other diseases. In other words, their immune system is capable of preventing those new colonies from taking hold in other tissues throughout the body. But over time, most people with root canals do seem to develop some kinds of systemic symptoms which they did not have before.
The “focal infection” theory says that the bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissues where they can travel to other locations in the body via the bloodstream. The new location can be any organ or tissue, and the new colony will be a new source of infection in a body plagued by chronic or recurrent infections.
Root canal or extraction?
Just extracting the tooth is not enough when removal proves necessary. In his research, Dr. Price found bacteria in the tissues and bone just adjacent to the tooth’s root. So what is now recommended is slow-speed drilling with a burr, to remove 1 millimeter of the entire bony socket.
If the tooth is dead and it is impossible to revive it, then it would be best to have a root canal with a material called “Biocalex”. “Biocalex” eliminates many of the organisms and is far less likely to cause complication in the short run. If this fails and one is seriously debilitated, it maybe necessary to extract the tooth. Check with a biological dentist for this. Many biological dentists have alternative methods, such as infra-red lasers, which can save the tooth in about 1/4 of the cases.

Are Root Canals Risky?
Root canal is a procedure in which dentists remove diseased or injured pulp that runs from a tooth’s interior down its root. Pulp contains blood vessels and nerves and provides nutrients to the tooth. Infection in pulp can progress to an extremely painful abscess. In the past, a tooth with a diseased root had to be extracted, but dentists can now remove the pulp, seal off the cavity (root canal) to protect it and save the tooth.
The idea that root canals pose a risk to general health comes from research suggesting that bacteria and viruses left behind at the tip of the root canal might persist and multiply in the space around the tooth. Other research cited by holistic dentists (including my own dentist, Steve Swidler) focuses on people with chronic health concerns. These dentists think that root canal procedures may raise disease risks.
As for the idea that root canal is associated with breast cancer and other serious conditions, Dr. Swidler subscribes to the theory that every tooth is in a different body meridian and is related to different organs, bones and joints. This doesn’t mean that root canal on a tooth in the same meridian as a breast can cause cancer. But Dr. Swidler says that if he had a patient with breast cancer and an infected first or second molar on the same circuit as the affected breast, he would urge her to have the tooth removed.
To sum up, Dr. Swidler and other holistic dentists who subscribe to these theories believe that losing a tooth is sometimes better for your health than have a root canal. Mainstream dentists and the American Dental Association do not share those views and maintain that the procedure is safe. That’s my personal belief, as well. Given

Quick Facts on Fluoride
About Fluoride and Cavities…
Even supporters of fluoride are reducing their claims about its cavity fighting abilities.
- In 1988, the American Dental Association claimed a 40-60% reduction of cavities from the use of fluoride; they now claim 18-25%; and other supporters claim only 12%.
- In the largest study ever done, records of 39,000 US school children between the ages of 5 and 17, from 84 areas of the country with fluoridated water (1/3rd), partially fluoridated water (1/3rd) or un-fluoridated water (1/3rd) showed NO STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE in the rate of tooth decay in these communities.
About Water Fluoridation…
- Sodium fluoride and silicofluorides are added to 62% of U.S. and 40% of Canadian public water supplies.
- A World Health Organization survey reports a reduction in the rates of dental decay in western Europe equal to or greater than in the U.S., even though 98% of the western European water supply is un-fluoridated.
- Water fluoridation mass medicates at higher than prescribed levels for young children (0-4yrs). The scheduled dose for infants under 6 months is NONE.
- 66.4% of children living in “optimally fluoridated” communities have at least one tooth that displays visible signs of fluoride overdose (dental fluorosis).
- The chemicals used in 90% of U.S. water fluoridation programs are industrial-grade hazardous wastes captured in the pollution-control scrubber systems of the phosphate fertilizer industry.
- Until the early 1940s, fluorides produced as a by-product of aluminum and fertilizer industries were considered so toxic they could only be sold off for use in Rat Poison & Insecticide.
- Drinking water fluoridation is opposed by both the Pasteur Institute and the Nobel Institute.

The Link Between Root Canals and Cancer
Boston management consultant Will R. didn’t have to go to the doctor to know he had cancer. He knew he had cancer when he started bleeding through his rectum in 2002. He was in his late 50s when this happened.
A medical examination confirmed Will’s strong suspicion: it was colorectal cancer. Doctors found a two-centimeter tumor.
Article from How to Cure Almost Any Cancer at Home for $5.15 a Day” By Bill Henderson with Andrew Scholberg
But cancer was just one of Will’s many health problems. He also suffered from:
- Frequent, splitting headaches
- Severe sleep apnea and heavy snoring, causing him to wake up in the middle of the night as if he were about to choke
- Intense pain in the roof of his mouth
- Fatigue
- Fungus on his feet, back, and abdomen
- Dimming eyesight
- Night sweats so bad the sheets were soaking wet
- Twitching when he dozed off or fell asleep
Will didn’t want to go under the knife. He wanted to try alternative therapies to get rid of his cancer. But the surgeon scared him onto the operating table by telling him, “You’ll die without surgery.” He had the operation in October of 2002.
Of course, doctors practically insisted that Will take radiation and chemotherapy. But he refused because he believed alternative treatments would be more effective.
Will became better educated about cancer than his oncologist. He read more than a dozen books about cancer, and two key facts popped out at him:
- To beat cancer, you have to make your body as healthy as possible by natural methods. To reach this state of health, it’s necessary to get rid of other diseases and infections in your body.
- You can’t be healthy if you have dead teeth such as root canal teeth, infected teeth, or infected cavitations in the jaw.
Root canals are safe, right? WRONG!
In 2003 a biological dentist examined Will and found several severe problems. (Biological dentists are mavericks who regard root canals, mercury and fluoride as harmful.) Will’s two root canals were infected with staph and strep. The dentist confirmed these infections by laboratory analysis.
But Will’s jaw had other problems, too. During his 20s when his wisdom teeth were extracted, the dentist failed to remove all of the connective tissues. As a result, the sockets didn’t heal properly but became infected with staph and strep. This kind of dental problem following a crude extraction of a tooth is called a cavitation.
Because of his cavitations, Will had serious necrosis of the jaw — in other words, gangrene!
And the trouble with these toxic pockets in his jaw is that the staph and strep were spreading throughout Will’s body, causing all kinds of health ailments. Will’s root canals and the improper extraction of his wisdom teeth had caused his colorectal cancer.
Not only did the biological dentist fix Will’s jaw, but he also replaced Will’s mercury fillings with biologically compatible fillings.
As you know, mercury is one of the most toxic substances known to man: a teaspoon of mercury can poison a whole lake. Yet the dental establishment still claims that mercury is a wonderful substance for filling cavities.
The American Dental Association (ADA) has been peddling the “mercury is safe” message to the public for decades, and it’s too stubborn to admit it was wrong. It’s in denial about mercury, just as it’s in denial about root canals.
After the biological dentist fixed Will’s teeth, his health made a 180-degree turnaround:
- His cancer went into remission.
- His frequent headaches went away.
- His intense pain in the roof of his mouth went away.
- His fatigue went away.
- His fungus went away.
- His heavy night sweats stopped.
- His nighttime twitching stopped.
- His sleep apnea went away.
- His heavy snoring stopped.
- He stopped waking up in a panic with a choking feeling.
- His eyesight improved.
Will’s oncologist was so impressed with his recovery from cancer that he told him, “You’re the longest-living person I have who hasn’t done conventional therapy. Your life expectancy was six months. There’s no one like you that we know about!”
The main thing that helped Will, without a doubt, was getting his root canal teeth removed, getting his infected cavitations cleaned out, and having his mercury fillings replaced with a biologically compatible material.
“But are all root canals bad?”
You might be wondering whether root canals are always bad. Yes, they are. They’re not safe. If someone with a root canal seems to be in good health, you can be sure that the person’s immune system is strong enough to fight off the toxicity from the root canal. But when the same person encounters severe stress, such as a job loss, divorce, or the death of a loved one, the immune system may become weak. When the body can no longer fight off the toxicity from a root canal, a disease such as cancer can break out.
As for wisdom tooth extractions, the dentist often fails to remove all of the connective tissue from the socket. This is what leads to cavitations. Cavitations and root canals cause necrosis of the jaw: gangrene. And these dental problems contribute to perhaps half of the cancer cases in America.
“Fish story” explains what causes cancer
Here’s a “fish story” that explains the cancer disaster in America.
Half the catfish in the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C., have cancerous tumors in their livers. The Anacostia River is little more than a toxic waste dump. Located within the city limits, this small, slow-moving river catches all of the nasty runoff from the city. It’s actually a wonder that any fish live in it at all.
The catfish in the Anacostia River eliminate toxins and poisons through their livers. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but there’s so much pollution that the catfish are taking in poisons faster than their livers can process and eliminate them.
So how would you “cure” an Anacostia River catfish of its liver tumors? With surgery? With toxic chemotherapy? With a liver transplant? Even if these treatments were feasible, what good would they do if we just put the “cured” catfish back into the filthy river?
It’s a fact that people with cancer — like the Anacostia River catfish — have too much toxicity in their bodies. It’s necessary to avoid taking in more toxins and to get rid of the toxicity that’s already inside.
Using a healthy, organic eating plan helps the body get ride of many poisons. But a healthy diet won’t do anything to fix an infected jawbone or a toxic root canal tooth.
Visualize a wisdom tooth being extracted. If the dentist or oral surgeon fails to remove the connecting ligament or leaves in too much bone, the gum and jaw won’t heal properly. With the tooth missing, anaerobic bacteria can start growing in the hole, and this becomes even more toxic than botulism. This toxicity can get into the bloodstream and cause breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other types of cancer.
In fact, when a woman has cancer in one breast, you’ll often find that the culprit is a root canal on the same side as the cancerous breast!
There can be no longer be any doubt about the connection between root canals and cancer. I’ve had experience with over 3,000 cancer patients. When these cancer patients get their mouths cleaned up, they get well — even if they’ve tried everything else.
Pioneer dentist proved root canal toxicity in 1920s
Early in the 1900s, Dr. Weston Price, a pioneer dentist, discovered and proved that root canals are highly toxic. Dr. Price is considered one of the greatest dentists of all time. He was the head of the research arm of the precursor to the ADA.
Working with 60 other prominent dentists, Dr. Price tried to find a way to do a root canal safely. They worked with hundreds of patients, and tried everything under the sun. And Dr. Price concluded that there’s no way to do it.
Dr. Price found that the toxicity of root canal teeth caused a wide variety of health problems, including rheumatoid arthritis, MS, cancer, glaucoma, diabetes, and so on. And he proved it with a rabbit experiment. This experiment should be famous, but the medical and dental Establishment wants to drop it down the memory hole.
Here’s how the experiment worked: When Dr. Price took a root canal tooth out of a diseased patient’s mouth and implanted it under the skin of a rabbit. The rabbit would quickly develop the same disease.
If the patient had glaucoma, the rabbit got glaucoma. If the patient had arthritis, the rabbit got arthritis. If the patient had cancer, the rabbit got cancer. And so on. This happened hundreds of times.
Dr. Price recommended that dentists immediately stop doing root canals.
But root canals are a good income-producer for dentists. Modern dentists in America do about 40 million root canals a year. No wonder half of all American men and a third of women can expect to eventually get cancer. Each root canal silently seeps poison into the system, often resulting in health problems.

Fluoride in Water Linked to Lower IQ in Children
Is this the end of water fluoridation?
NEW YORK, Dec. 21, 2010 PRNewswire-USNewswire
Exposure to fluoride may lower children’s intelligence says a study pre-published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a publication of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (online December 17, 2010).
Fluoride is added to 70% of U.S. public drinking water supplies.
According to Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network, “This is the 24th study that has found this association, but this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children’s blood. This brings us closer to a cause and effect relationship between fluoride exposure and brain damage in children.”
“What is also striking is that the levels of the fluoride in the community where the lowered IQs were recorded were lower than the EPA’s so-called ‘safe’ drinking water standard for fluoride of 4 ppm and far too close for comfort to the levels used in artificial fluoridation programs (0.7-1.2 ppm),” says Connett.
In this study, 512 children aged 8-13 years in two Chinese villages were studied and tested — Wamaio with an average of 2.47 mg/L water fluoride (range 0.57-4.50 mg/L) and Xinhuai averaging 0.36 mg/L (range 0.18-0.76 mg/L).
The authors eliminated both lead exposure and iodine deficiency as possible causes for the lowered IQs. They also excluded any children who had a history of brain disease or head injury and none drank brick tea, known to contain high fluoride levels. Neither village is exposed to fluoride pollution from burning coal or other industrial sources.
About 28% of the children in the low-fluoride area scored as bright, normal or higher intelligence compared to only 8% in the “high” fluoride area of Wamaio.
In the high-fluoride city, 15% had scores indicating mental retardation and only 6% in the low-fluoride city.
The study authors write: “In this study we found a significant dose-response behavior relation between fluoride level in serum and children’s IQ.”
In addition to this study, and the 23 other IQ studies, there have been over 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage (all the IQ and animal brain studies are listed in Appendix 1 in The Case Against Fluoride available online at http://fluoridealert.org/caseagainstfluoride.appendices.html).
One of the earliest animal studies of fluoride’s impact on the brain was published in the U.S. This study by Mullenix et. al (1995) led to the firing of the lead author by the Forsyth Dental Center. “This sent a clear message to other researchers in the U.S. that it was not good for their careers to look into the health effects of fluoride — particularly on the brain,” says Connett.
Connett adds, “The result is that while the issue of fluoride’s impact on IQ is being aggressively pursued around the world, practically no work has been done in the U.S. or other fluoridating countries to repeat their findings. Sadly, health agencies in fluoridated countries seem to be more intent on protecting the fluoridation program than protecting children’s brains.”
When the National Research Council of the National Academies reviewed this topic in their 507-page report “Fluoride in Drinking Water: A Review of EPA’s Standards” published in 2006, only 5 of the 24 IQ studies were available in English. Even so the panel found the link between fluoride exposure and lowered IQ both consistent and “plausible.”
According to Tara Blank, Ph.D., the Science and Health Officer for the Fluoride Action Network, “This should be the study that finally ends water fluoridation. Millions of American children are being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin on a daily basis. Who in their right minds would risk lowering their child’s intelligence in order to reduce a small amount of tooth decay, for which the evidence is very weak.” (see The Case Against Fluoride, Chelsea Green, October 2010)

Does Gum Disease Cause Cancer?
By Rob Stein – May 29, 2008 – The Washington Post
It took a lot of lectures from my dentist, but I long ago became a dedicated flosser. Now a new study is making me glad I did. And it’s not just because flossing my teeth daily may help me avoid dentures. The new research indicates that people who have gum disease may be at increased risk for cancer.
Cancer? How could gum disease increase the risk for cancer? Well, previous research has found a possible link between gum disease and other illnesses, such as heart disease and diabetes. The thinking is that inflammation in the gums may lead to inflammation in other parts of the body, which can damage arteries supplying blood to the heart and other parts of the body. Some studies had also suggested a link to cancer, which may also be caused in part by inflammation.
To explore that, Dominique Michaud of the Imperial College London and colleagues analyzed data collected by the Health Professionals Follow-up study, a Harvard project that, in 1986, began tracking thousands of male doctors and other health professionals ages 40 to 75. Michaud and his colleagues looked at data collected from 48,375 men who were followed for up to nearly 18 years.
After taking into consideration factors that might confuse the findings, such as smoking and diet, the researchers report in the June issue of the journal Lancet Oncology that that those who had gum disease had a 14 percent higher risk of cancer compared to those with no history of gum disease.
The risk varied from cancer to cancer. Gum disease appeared to increase the risk for lung cancer by 36 percent, for kidney cancer by 49 percent, for pancreatic cancer by 54 percent and for white blood cancers such as leukemia by 30 percent.
The researchers say the findings need to be confirmed by additional studies. And scientists need to figure out how exactly gum disease may be linked to cancer.
But in the meantime I’m going to make sure I keep up my flossing.

Your Gums or Your Life

I admit it. As my periodontist prepared to probe my gums with a shiny Orwellian torture device, I was scared. Then he began talking about gum disease and – I realized things could be worse.
Studies increasingly show a connection between good gums and good overall health. Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease), has been linked to a variety of systemic health problems, including heart disease and stroke.
Here’s why periodontal disease may affect your overall health. Periodontitis is infection of the gum, bone and other tissues surrounding the tooth, caused by a build up of tartar below the gum line. More than 350 types of bacteria can flourish in the tartar (hardened plaque) on your teeth and enter your blood stream directly through damaged and bleeding gums. This invasion can create havoc throughout your body, including your heart.
“An accumulating body of evidence suggests that periodontal infection may contribute to arteriosclerotic heart disease,” says oral bacteria researcher Robert J. Genco, D.D.S., Ph.D., of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. In a recent University of Michigan study involving 400 men 60 or older, researchers found that those suffering from advanced periodontal disease were four and a half times more likely to have coronary heart disease than those without gum disease.
Why is periodontal disease so hard on your heart? Researchers at SUNY at Buffalo have shown that people with gum disease tend to have high blood levels of fibrinogen, a molecule which can cause clotting and C-reactive protein, an inflammatory molecule. The study reported in the February 2000 American Journal of Epidemiology also found that people with periodontal disease might have higher levels of cholesterol.
Periodontal disease increases your risk of stroke. The same molecules that affect your heart can also block the blood flow to your brain, increasing your risk of stroke. A 1999 preliminary study at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons found that people with diseased gums tended to have more plaque in their carotid (neck) arteries. Those with the most diseased gums had 1.12 millimeters of build-up in their artery lining, compared with 0.74 millimeters for those with the healthiest gums. That’s not good, since the National Stroke Association estimates that clots or blockages cause 80% of all strokes – one reason why neurologists should keep an eye on their patients teeth.
Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Respiratory problems and regular dental visits.Diabetics should also schedule regular dental visits. Researchers at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center have found that uncontrolled diabetes can lead to a higher risk of gum disease, which, in turn, can make diabetes more problematic by reducing the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels. The increased bacteria load in the body caused by periodontal disease has also been linked to osteoporosis and respiratory problems.
Why this is good news for your health and your doctor. There is an upside to all of this. Dentists and doctors are increasingly checking their patients mouths for early signs of hypertension, heart disease and diabetes. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers are studying whether dental x-rays of bones around the jaw can help predict the onset of osteoporosis elsewhere in the body leading to earlier diagnosis. In early 2001 dental organizations, physicians and biologists plan to convene at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland, to review the latest research linking gum infection and chronic diseases of the body.
For now, there is little mystery about how to care for your gums. With conscientious brushing, consistent flossing, and semi-annual dental visits, gum disease can usually be prevented or controlled. In addition, if you need to visit the periodontist, don’t be afraid. Today’s gum treatments are more pain-free than you think and far better than the alternative of heart disease and stroke.
